OutRecording Sound Map Now Online!

It has been a while since my last post. It’s a busy time of year for our voice over business, so field recording has to take a back seat to that unfortunately. However, with more time inside, I’ve had time to create my very own sound map!

I got the idea from SoundandTaiwan website I wrote about here.

I’ve found myself with a lot of extra content from my recordings. Sometimes the place just didn’t sound as good as I thought it would or something *ruined* the recording. (stupid dog! karaoke! car horn! etc) Well, even though they’re not suitable for use in a project, they’re still an accurate representation of how that area sounds on a normal day, right? So I figured, why let the recording go to waste? And don’t get me wrong, they’re all not flawed. Some of them just had a better sound somewhere else in the recording. I’ll typically record 10 ~ 20 minutes a shot. So without further ado…

Please Welcome the OutRecording Sound Map!

Ok, it’s sparsely populated at the moment. I’m going through recordings when I have time (which I mentioned is not so much at the moment) but I hope to see it grow. If you’re really interested in hearing Taiwan and can’t make the trip over, then check out the website linked above. He’s got a treasure trove of recordings.

So sound maps are hardly anything new. But I really like them. The one thing I see missing with a lot of them is PICTURES!!! You can hear some great sounds but having no context sometimes leaves you guessing and makes for an un-fulfilling experience. I’m hoping to overcome that by adding pictures to my sounds. Not tiny little pictures, but full screen pictures you can view in a separate window while you listen. I also have a little surprise coming in the mail soon that will allow you to see the area just like in Google Map street view. But for now, just normal pictures.

What I’ve come up with isn’t perfect, but I’m happy thus far with the results. I’m working on little tweaks here and there. There are no descriptions, as I feel the pictures should tell the story adequately.

Please do let me know what you think could be done better. I’m open to criticism. In the meantime, enjoy my recordings!
