There&#8217;s a network of trails taking you all around the mountain. You can start by going up one of the two trails opposite each other at the beginning. It doesn&#8217;t matter which. You can get to about 1250 meters with your bike and can hike up a bit higher if you&#8217;d like. There are a lot of hiking trails, so watch out for hikers. The times I&#8217;ve rode there I didn&#8217;t see many hikers, if any. But that was on weekdays.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the ride is an abandoned aborigine village here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/22%C2%B055'43.4%22N+120%C2%B041'02.7%22E\/@22.9287334,120.6818822,1106m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d22.9287285!4d120.6840709\">22.9287285,120.6840709<\/a>. It would make a decent area for camping, assuming it&#8217;s allowed. I saw evidence of a camp fire, so it&#8217;s possible. You&#8217;ll find an intact traditional home there. There&#8217;s also a little gazebo. If you walk around the side of the house you&#8217;ll find stairs to take you down to the remains of the village. It&#8217;s worth a look. I did a thorough hike of the village and surrounding area in <a href=\"http:\/\/outrecording.com\/hiking-in-and-around-the-teredeka-settlement-in-maolin-%e5%be%97%e6%a8%82%e7%9a%84%e5%8d%a1-%e8%8c%82%e6%9e%97\/\">December, 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of trails are double track. Old concrete in the beginning later turns to dirt and further towards the top is mixed dirt and rocks. It gets steep at the top; I would suggest having proper dirt tires if you plan to make it that far.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a trail that takes you to the other side of the mountain. There&#8217;s a sign that seems to say don&#8217;t go in there, but I found a lot of hiking ribbon markers in that area. So people must be hiking it. Google maps shows the road will take you all the way to the to the main road (27), but the road has been destroyed. At the time of this post the path to the waterfall is still destroyed. You can still make it if you don&#8217;t mind getting off the beaten path and doing some boulder hopping. I wouldn&#8217;t do it alone, though I did. Be safe. There&#8217;s a parking lot and a smallish waterfall and pool when you first drive in. The bathrooms have been rebuilt. They were really nasty for a while there.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a large temple here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/22%C2%B055'36.6%22N+120%C2%B040'09.6%22E\/@22.9268499,120.6671522,1106m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d22.926845!4d120.6693409\">22.926845,120.6693409<\/a>. I doubt anyone goes to this temple much. It&#8217;s really remote and difficult to get to with the main road gone. However I did meet a caretaker as I drove by. I&#8217;m honestly surprised this temple hasn&#8217;t been abandoned.<\/li>\n<li>I didn&#8217;t travel further down the road past the temple. I&#8217;m not sure how far it goes before it ends. After I left Maolin I tried going up from the other side to see how far I could get. It wasn&#8217;t far. Since my first peak, JiuBaoShan \u2013 \u4e45\u4fdd\u5c71 in April of 2018, I\u2019ve hiked to nearly 70 peaks in Taiwan and had a ton of adventures! Taiwan is such a great country to hike. As fate would have it, one day I found myself in the mountains on a rocky trail while looking for a place to record. My scooter couldn\u2019t handle the rough conditions so I continued on foot. This eventually led to me purchasing a dual sport motorcycle \u2013 two in fact. Slowly my field recordings became less and less until I was riding off-road exclusively. This has led to many great adventures that I decided to share here. Hiking seemed a natural extension to the off-roading for me. Many hiking trails begin at the end of a motorcycle trail. So I would often follow them on foot, wondering where they would take me. I didn\u2019t want to forget these hiking trips, so I decided to write about them here. Hopefully they\u2019ll be interesting and helpful to you. Since my first peak, JiuBaoShan \u2013 \u4e45\u4fdd\u5c71 in April of 2018, I\u2019ve hiked to nearly 70 peaks in Taiwan and had a ton of adventures! Taiwan is such a great country to hike. I\u2019m really lucky to have chosen here to live. I was a brand ambassador for Six Moons Designs as part of their 2020 and 2021 International Ambassador Team.
